Eve Kalyva

The artist Eve Kalyva,  from Greece, was our artist-in-resident from April 1st until August 31st 2016 she  worked on her artist book Travels from Latin America.

Biography

Eve Kalyva is a writer and an art critic. Eve comes from an interdisciplinary background with studies in dance, fine art, sciences, comparative literature and art history. She has worked as lecturer in the UK and Argentina and has collaborated with art institutes in the Netherlands and Latin America as artist in residence, curator and museum educator.

Her work explores the relation between art and politics, multimodality, everyday life and the absurd, and is informed by magical realism and traveling. Her current work explores the idea of writing as a performance of sharing.  As part of her residence, Eve will complete her artist book Travels from Latin America. The text is based on her travels from the period 2013-14 and consists of diary entries, short stories and poems. The project will be accompanied by a presentation, a work-in-progress installation and an open call to national and international artists for visual art contributions. The final selection of works will be included in the book’s publication. Input on graphic design and book binding are also welcome.

This project invites international and transcultural dialogue and pushes the creative process towards more collaborative and organically emerging forms. It will not only share the author’s impressions from other places and people but also give others the opportunity to journey and respond with their own experiences, shared impressions and projections. As such, it critically engages preconceptions about the other and seeks to overcome cultural differences and fear.

Furthermore, in her capacity as an art critic, Eve will collaborate with the artistic community of WG in the form of public discussions, open studio visits and art reviews. Workshops on creative writing will also be available.
